A 24-year old man who was being transported to a prison in Lincoln County made an attempt to escape by pretending to have chest pains. After his complaints, police officers brought him to a hospital. There, his girlfriend managed to distract a corrections officer in the hallway, leaving the inmate alone in his room. The man ripped his shackles off the post and escaped after hiding in the bathroom. Police have not yet been able to locate him.
The inmate and his girlfriend probably planned out the escape carefully. Sometimes I wonder if the media is responsible for some people's creative planning. For instance, movies like "Italian Job" and "Ocean's Eleven" might encourage audience to think and plan strategically. Although the inmate's attempt was pretty simple, it worked. I wonder if the plan was in any way inspired by movies.

Sure movies and the media may inspire some to do illegal things and plot escapes, yet I do not think that most of these people actually follow through with their ideas. Most crime scenes in movies are over the top, complicated, and exaggerated due to the entertainment factor, and difficult for people in every day life to just replicate. Yet, I agree the media and movies do plant seeds in the minds of criminals. Yet, more importantly, my concern is how were these police officers so easily distracted that they allowed an inmate to escape? Were they properly trained in their job? I guess not.
ReplyDeleteThis story is actually really entertaining, although scary at the same time. I agree with Victoria when she asked how the police officers were so easily distracted that the inmate was able to escape to a bathroom.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that the plots in the movies like "Oceans Eleven" and even "Shawshank Redemption" are just so over the top that they would never be able to be executed in real life. I am sure the movies give inmates good ideas and maybe that leads to their attempted escape but most probably just chicken out when it really comes down to it.
